PROFILE
Following his heroic performance in the face of injury to
claim the BRONZE medal at the 2001 World Championships in
Edmonton; Dean Macey has now established himself as a major
name in international athletics.
Dean Macey stormed onto the world scene at the 1999 World
Championships in Seville by breaking six personal bests to
obtain an outstanding SILVER medal. Battling with injury and
against all odds his magnificent achievement was accomplished
at the tender age of 21.
Dean entered 2000 as one of Britain's main contenders for
Olympic glory. However, an injury hit season meant he was
unable to complete a competitive Decathlon prior to the
Games. Even so, against all odds, and after an incredible
first day that saw him smash two lifetime bests in the Long
Jump and 400m to lie in 2nd place overnight, Dean finally
finished a very credible 4th place, only 74 points off the
eventual champion.
Already being hailed as the new Daley Thompson, Dean has only
been an athlete for the last six years. His potential as a
decathlete was slow to emerge. Having competed originally in
single events, he was finally persuaded to become a multi
eventer in 1994 and immediately broke the English Schools
Record. His meteoric rise has seen him reach the dizzy
heights of 3rd in the world during the 1999 season, having
recorded the second best ever score for a UK athlete; a score
which only Double Olympic Champion Daley Thompson has
bettered.
Dean's media career has blossomed with his new found stardom
although this has not affected him in the slightest, and he
continues to live near his parents in his home town of Canvey
Island, Essex. Since the World's last year, Dean has appeared
on numerous television programmes ranging from Grandstand, A
Question of Sport through to Blue Peter and was named The
BBC's Young Sports Personality of the Year as well as Young
Sportsmen of the Year.
Dean has consistently been a favorite of the media and his
profile has rapidly grown. 2000 saw him team up with Mirror
Sport as their official partner throughout the Olympic period
and 2001 saw him partner up with the Evening Standard. In
2002 Dean was an integral member of the BBC's team covering
the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, smiling in the face of
adversity when injury prevented him from competing. In
addition to this, he is now a member of the exclusive Team
Oakley and an ambassador for both Cadbury's and
Powerade.
Dean plans to bounce back from the disappointment of missing
2002 with an assault on the World Championships in Paris,
Summer 2003
