PROFILE
Jonathan Edwards' extraordinary achievements on track have
earned him a place in history as one of the World's greatest
athletes.
Having continued an unparalleled run of success since 2000,
Jonathan recently added the Commonwealth Gold to his
collection, meaning that he joins a very elite group of
athletes who have held all four major titles at one
time - only three other British athletes have ever
achieved this. He also took Bronze at the European
Championships in Munich. Despite questions being asked about
how much longer he intends to compete, Jonathan is keeping
his options open for the future, not surprisingly as he is
world number one by some margin.
2001 saw Jonathan win Gold at the World Championships in
Edmonton, the European Cup in Madrid and the Goodwill Games
in Brisbane.
In 2000, Jonathan achieved his ultimate goal - winning
Gold at the Olympics. Up until then, it had been the one Gold
medal that had eluded him. He jumped 17.77 at the glittering
event in Sydney, the leading distance of 2000, on one of the
greatest nights in Olympic history at Stadium Australia.
Jonathan returned home to a hero's
welcome.
Although there have been many, probably the most outstanding
highlight of Jonathan's career was in 1995 when he set a
World Record at the World Championships in Gothenburg with an
amazing jump of 18.29m.
A marvellous year on track in 1995 was matched by his
accolades off track when he won the BBC's prestigious Sports
Personality of the Year Award with a unanimous vote, was
crowned The IAAF's Athlete of the year and was subsequently
awarded an MBE for services rendered to British Sport. In
2000 Jonathan was awarded a CBE in the New Years Honours
List.
In addition to Jonathan's on track career, he has also
achieved a great deal of off track success with carefully
selected commercial partners such as Energizer and MG Rover
and he currently enjoys fulfilling the prestigious role of
Worldwide Ambassador for the Asics brand. Given his unique
status as an athlete, Jonathan is in constant demand as a
speaker at a wide variety of events and has recently joined
forces with Phil Hall, the owner of Signify, who is a leading
corporate motivational speaker. Together Jonathan and Phil
deliver relevant, well-informed presentations to their
audiences and they have received very positive feedback from
major corporations.
Jonathan's natural ability as an academic, coupled with his
literary skills have led to an impressive list of commissions
from a variety of magazines and national newspapers. At
present he enjoys a successful relationship with The Times
and is writing for the paper again throughout the course of
2002.
